Alphabet's Waymo is accelerating its autonomous vehicle ambitions with plans to launch robotaxi services in three major U.S. cities. The expansion targets Detroit—the historic heart of the auto industry—alongside San Diego and Las Vegas, marking a strategic push into diverse urban landscapes.

Regulatory approvals remain the critical path forward. While Waymo has California's blessing for autonomous ridehailing, Nevada and Michigan require additional permits. The company must secure testing approvals from Nevada's DMV and transportation authority, plus a Transportation Network Company license in Michigan before commercial deployment.

Winter-weather testing in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has reportedly strengthened Waymo's year-round operational capabilities. Yet the timeline for Detroit's launch remains unclear, contrasting with Las Vegas' scheduled summer 2024 debut. San Diego's rollout hinges on ongoing coordination with local officials and emergency responders.
